Everyone Needs a Flu Shot! PDF Print E-mail

Health officials are saying that only a fraction of the people who need flu shots the most are getting them. Surprisingly, just one in five babies and toddlers are being immunized. In years past, the vaccine supply shortage confused patients and frustrated health care providers. There is no shortage of the vaccine this year. Anyone wanting a vaccine should be able to get it. The government recommends that 200 million people get the shot, but fear that too few people are listening. Different strains of flue arise each year, so last year’s shot will be of no help this year. Each year a new shot is developed that matches the flu strains officials believe will be most likely to occur. We need a flu shot each year to be protected!

The West Allis Health Department is hosting several community flu clinics throughout October and November 2007. Do not worry if you don’t get the shot right away. Winter is not too late to be protected according to the Centers for Disease Control. Call the West Allis Flu Shot Hotline at 302-8670 for specific clinic dates and times. Flu shots are $30 for adults, free for children 18 years and younger. Medicare Part B covers the cost of the flu shot so be sure to bring your card when receiving the shot.
