George & Kathy Schneider Two evenings each week for the past 13 years, George Schneider and other volunteer physicians, typically after a full day of seeing patients, have treated people without health insurance at the Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic. As of January 2009 the clinic will treat its 20,000th patient. That clinic depends partly on doctors, nurses and others who volunteer their time and skills to help some of the most vulnerable people in society. Hundreds of doctors have volunteered at the clinic at 9330 W. Lincoln Ave. in West Allis over the years. No one has put in more time than Kathy and George Schneider. Kathy Schneider started the clinic in 1995 and has kept it afloat for more than a dozen years. She typically works about 30 hours a week, handling everything from cleaning to scavenging for supplies and prescription drugs to ensuring the clinic has enough money to pay the rent and keep the lights on. George Schneider, an internal medicine specialist, is the clinic’s medical director. He has volunteered his time two evenings a week for most of the years that the clinic has been open. The clinic handles about 2,500 patient visits a year. It draws on a network of about 45 volunteer physicians. In addition, doctors often will arrange for other hospitals to provide charity care if a patient requires surgery. But Kathy Schneider gets the credit for running the clinic on a meager budget. The clinic has spent less than $650,000 since it opened and has seen over 20,000 patients. Marty McLeod-Boville Marty McLeod-Boville has been a dedicated community member for years.
